As the UI/UX designer, I directed a team of two UX researchers and a visual designer to develop a mobile & web app focused on reducing food waste. I managed the design process from research to high-fidelity prototypes, ensuring that our user-centred solutions effectively aligned with the app's mission.

Duration: 8 weeks - Including both mobile app and web app UI designs.

My client is a UK-based small startup company with an idea: To sell food products close to their expiry date at half price or less. They’ve teamed up with local shops and supermarkets, who are happy to support their idea. Through the app, customers can find nearby stores offering great deals on food. Customers can purchase products at a great price while helping to reduce food waste, and stores can sell items that would otherwise be thrown away. It’s a simple win-win for everyone! Their goal is simple: save money and reduce food waste.

Client: Yes2Food

My client wanted to create a platform that helps business users save money and cut down on food waste. Businesses can sell their use-by-date food or food on sale to wider customers. They already have an app in the Play Store that has been developed with the help of developers, but it’s not as easy to use as it should be. The design feels outdated, and some parts are hard to navigate, which makes it less user-friendly.

Improve the platform to make it more user-friendly, intuitive, and professional. Make it not only functional but also enhance the overall experience.

The current app UI design is hard to navigate and feels outdated, making it less user-friendly. I believe that when users trust the quality and safety of discounted products, they’re more likely to make a purchase. If the app is also easy to use and convenient, they’ll return regularly. However, the current designs don’t effectively convey this, leading to lower user engagement. My task is to improve the flow, update the design, and make the app not only functional but also more trustworthy and engaging.

Old UI Screens Tested by Heuristic Evaluation

We conducted a heuristic evaluation using Nielsen’s 10 usability heuristics. Major issues identified:

Visibility of system status: Buyers didn’t know when products were out of stock until checkout.

Match between system and real-world tasks: Expiry and discount details were hidden under extra clicks.

Aesthetic and minimalist design: Screens were cluttered with redundant buttons and inconsistent iconography.

During an initial review of user feedback and support data, I identified several key problems:

The UI was visually cluttered and felt outdated, with inconsistent styles that failed to build trust.

Critical information like expiry dates, seller reputation, and discounts was buried or unclear.

The product upload flow for businesses was complex and time-consuming, discouraging frequent listings.

The checkout process for buyers was unreliable and lacked clear cost breakdowns, leading to drop-offs.

Business owners spent too much time uploading items, often made errors in setting expiry or discounts, and struggled to track inventory.

User Flows: Mapped clear seller and buyer journeys to remove friction.

Wireframes: Created low-fidelity sketches to test layout ideas.

Visual Redesign: Built a modern, trust-building UI, clear typography, and consistent icons.

Iterative Feedback: Reviewed screens with stakeholders and refined based on practical suggestions.

We’re genuinely happy with how this redesign turned out. From the start, you listened to what we needed and took the time to understand our day-to-day challenges, especially for our small business owners who don’t have time to deal with complicated uploads.

The map-based home screen is a significant improvement it makes incredibly easy for our buyers to find trusted stores nearby, which is exactly what we wanted. You also ensured that the expiry dates and discounts are clear, which was one thing we didn’t want to compromise on.

The new design feels so much cleaner and more trustworthy than what we had before. You did a great job balancing our feedback with modern design ideas, and we appreciate how collaborative you were through the whole process. We can’t wait to see how this helps us grow and reduce food waste even more.

Iterative Design is Key: Testing early wireframes allowed us to identify and fix usability issues before moving to high-fidelity designs.

Effective Communication: Regular communication within the team and with stakeholders ensured alignment, allowing us to stay on track and deliver a successful product on time.

Redesigned an app where businesses can list their nearby expiry products and users can reserve items for in-store pickup. An E-commerce for local access.

Dopz is our in-house Configuration Management Database (CMDB) designed to help our IT operations team manage and track all hardware, software, and network assets in one place. Unlike generic CMDB tools, Dopz is built specifically for how our team works — with simple, intuitive workflows for adding, editing, and visualising configuration items and their relationships.

I led the design team in this project's design and UI testing from end to end. I collaborated with teammates during the early ideation stage, the product manager and the CEO throughout the entire project to,

Key goals: To make configuration item (CI) data easy to add, edit, and maintain. Visualise CIs' relationships clearly to help IT teams understand asset dependencies.

The design components used for this design project are Angular "PrimeNG".

Improved the usability of CI Management and Inventory modules for Dopz (our internal CMDB tool), making it more efficient and user-friendly for IT teams.
